Cable Car 1 is the flagship of the Powell Street Cable Car fleet. Built in 1973 to commemorate the centennial of the first San Francisco Cable Car line.
The roof and seats are from the original car 506. This car was given number 1 and Muni renumbered the rest of the Powell fleet (dropping the 5) to coincide with the original numbers from the1800s. Car 1 is the only cable car that carries no external advertising.
Cable Car No. 1 just returned to service after a three year hiatus for a complete rebuild. A KTVU report has more on the rebuild of car 1 and the care and maintenance of the cable car fleet.
