After Jessica Williams declared that she does not want to replace Jon Stewart, a journalist decided it to diagnose Williams with “imposter syndrome” (the idea that a woman in a male dominated field doesn’t feel as if they’re not doing enough to be in said position) and this was Williams response.
I am so mad at everything that’s been thrown at Jessica lately. You know how we talk about the object of your fandom not owing you anything? Jessica is articulate as fuck and can explain to you not just that she doesn’t, but why she is not yours.
bold emph mine.
There’s a marked difference between a star being responsible for the attention thrust upon them by their audience and a star having their audience project their own issues and attributes upon them.
I’ve been working with stars and their fandoms for a few years now. If you ever wonder why your favorite star isn’t on twitter/tumblr/instagram, it’s because they often fear stuff like this.
We have to ask ourselves, as fans, what is our own responsibility in creating respectable spaces for the stars we admire?
Also: I think it’s time to add “Impostor Syndrome” to the list of ideas the Internet has run through its conceptual centrifuge at high speed until barely a semblance of meaning remains intact.
