Action Comics vol.1 No.100 - Cover date September 1946
Action Comics reaches its landmark 100th issue, but the milestone passes with little fanfare. A never-miss Scotland Yard sleuth named Hawkins descends on Metropolis, intent on discovering Superman’s dual identity, and - frankly - nails it. Superman manages to create enough chaff and doubt by way of clever applications of his super-powers that Hawkins reverses his decision, which helps ensure Superman’s secret.
If the story sounds familiar, it’s because it’s practically identical to the radio episode “The Super-Sleuth”, which would have broadcast as this issue was hitting the racks.
Action’s 100th issue isn’t only a landmark for Superman, but also for his feature-mate Zatara the Magician who also debuted in Action Comics No.1 1939 (although, unfortunately, never captured the public imagination the same way)…
It’s awesome that the wily sleuth’s way of comparing Clark and Supes is by blowing the photos up to twenty feet high.
