July 31, 1973: On the occasion of a visit by Mayor John V. Lindsay, a detective at the 109th Precinct in Queens coded a sheet of fingerprints to be microfilmed and archived as part of a new system to track crime. “Mayor Lindsay ordered the anticrime system made available in every borough within 60 days immediately after he watched the one in the 109th Precinct scan 6,000 fingerprints or mug shots in 15 seconds and show the desired ones on a screen 18 inches square,” The Times reported.
