Helô Pinheiro, c. 1965

Considered the anthem of bossa nova, the song “Garota de Ipanema”, initially titled “Garota que passa (Girl who passes by)”, was composed by Vinicius de Moraes and Tom Jobim in 1962. Three years later came the version in english, “The Girl from Ipanema” recorded by Astrud Gilberto, which became a hit in the United States. The recognition came with the Grammy Award for Record of the Year. That’s when the world wanted to know who was the girl from Ipanema. Many women said to have inspired the song. But it was the author himself, Vinicius de Moraes, who made the public mention of Heloísa “Helô” Pinheiro.

We made for her, with all respect and mute enchantment, the samba that put her in headlines all over the world and turned our dear Ipanema into a magic word to foreign’s ears”, said the poet at the time.
