In its day, Graham’s Fred Basset, as appeared in the perpetually reactionary The Daily Mail, always seemed the essence of conservative complacency. But at least where this single collection is concerned, Fred Basset was at times biting social realism masquerading as cutsey breakfast-time comfort reading. As Tom Ewing said on Twitter of the second strip above;
“Christ! That one’s heartbreaking - Fred as child trying to protect his mum from emotionally abusive dad.“
