IBM 1620 computer and 1621 paper tape reader, Norwich University, Vermont, ca. 1962. The IBM 1620 was jokingly nicknamed CADET (“Can’t Add, Doesn’t Even Try”) by its users, in reference to its use of addition tables in memory instead of dedicated addition circuitry.
