ITEM 163: Fragment of a Mounted Photograph of the 1929 Stock Market Crash
Found on: 6/27/15
Materials: wood, paper
Damage/wear: broken in half
Provenance: unknown
Production details: This was produced by an unknown company in an unknown location.
Date or date range: printing/mounting date unknown; photograph taken on October 1, 1929
Still in production: no
Rare: possibly
Still attainable from: not currently available / probably custom-made, but a low-res version of the image is available for free on Wikimedia Commons and for a price in Corbis Images’ Bettman Collection.
Value: ?
Use: This is a photograph of a crowd gathering on Wall Street after the stock market crashed in October 1929, taken by an unknown freelance photographer. It is unclear what the markings on the back (”9.8.28.3A”) indicate. Because it is a panel and not a framed photograph, it seems likely that this was hung on a wall or otherwise part of an exhibit in a library, school, bank, etc.
