I saw Carol on Wednesday. This post will contain partial spoilers, so don’t read on if you intend to see it.

Can I even recall the last time I saw a film in which the final scene was so satisfying? I won’t spoil by mentioning specifically what happens, but it’s a truly, truly lovely scene, worth the investment of all 118 minutes.
The only other thing I’ll say is that the film excels at conveying female boredom—women’s boredom with the tediousness of having to put up with men in a world created by and for men. Of course, we know that the two protagonists are lesbians, but watching Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara stoically tolerate the self-absorbed, inept men in their lives brings to mind the boredom all women suffer every time we are expected to laugh at yet another unfunny joke, or feign gratitude for some man ‘granting’ us something to which we are already entitled by virtue of our humanity. You certainly don’t have to be gay to relate to that experience.
