Even though the Super Bowl is being held in the South Bay this year, at the new home of the Santa Clara 49ers, we are going to be made to feel the pinch. From January 23 to February 12, most of the area surrounding the Ferry Building and Justin Herman Plaza will be closed to traffic and transit, in order to set up and break down a week long street fair.
According to the Mayor’s office, the City will spend between $3.5 to $4 million in unreimbursed costs to host the NFL promotional event. The SFMTA is facing an estimated $1.7 million loss from the extra Muni service, detours, re-routes, and traffic control.
The street fair will be open to the public for free between January 30 and February 6. The “NFL Experience”, and other events, will require a paid admission.
