In the last Encounters session, on the first half of the Communist Manifesto, I asked every student to write a bit of language on the board that grabbed them. Then we tried to unpack central ideas from that language. Tonight , in preparing for the other half of the Manifesto I found “my” passage…that sentence paragraph in the middle of this page is such a doozy.
“The Bourgeois clap-trap about the family and education, about the hallowed co-relation of parent and child, becomes all the more disgusting, the more, by the actions of Modern Industry, all family ties among the proletarians are torn asunder, and their children transformed into simple articles of commerce and instruments of labour.”
Yep, let’s run with that a bit.Sure there was and is child labour…there’s also another level that we may be intimately familiar with.
“Kids, you are special and you can be or do anything you set your mind to. But keep in mind you only matter if you land a good job, or develop the potential to do so. (Even as your egos get stroked you’re being bought and sold…grow up and become alienated just like me.)Nothing could make me happier than when you really learn that lesson.”
This could be fun.
