On a blustery, early Spring day I rode over Southampton Water to explore the hinterland of Eling and Marchwood. Green-grey farm fields give way to housing estates which nestle uncomfortably close to hulking incinerator plants and military ports.
On the ferry home we were passed by a towering container ship heading toward the docks. Even though I live in this city, shaped by the sea and the container trade, it’s a rare thing to get this close to the maritime colossus and get a sense of just how much we bring in everyday in order to satisfy our need to consume.
