THE FUTURAMA
This is a massive model of a city which was part of a ride called ‘The Futurama’ designed by Norman Bel Geddes which was the main exhibit in the General Motors Pavilion at the New York World’s Fair 1939. The city gave visitors a glimpse of what the future (1960) had to offer. Obviously, given that General Motors was the sponser, the vision of the future involved a lot of highways and the promise of everyone owning a car. Have a look at This Video for a little tour of the city, complete with standard dramatic narration. Their airport prediction is fabulously out off the mark, also keep an eye out for the application of Harvey Wiley Corbett’s 1923 proposal for elevated walkways in New York. There’s also plenty more about the exhibit over at Wired.
