I’ll wait until Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s doc on the Vietnam War has aired in its entirety, but an early takeaway is wondering what Silicon Valley and the Ted Talk crowd can learn from the mistakes the US government made in Vietnam. Some problems cannot be solved with analytics and technology, and it would serve us well to know when a certain brand of short-sighted optimism that dreams of flying cars to the detriment of everything else is leading us astray.
If you’re watching the Vietnam documentary too, I highly recommend Errol Morris’ film The Fog of War, concerning then Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara’s roll in the Vietnam conflict. I aim to rewatch before the Ken Burns series ends.
