On Mondays we are sharing graphics standards manuals on our Instagram page! But today’s manual is from the Vignelli archives so we’re sharing it here too!
In 1968, while at Unimark International, Massimo Vignelli was hired to design the signage for the Washington DC Metro. Architect Harry Weese specified that no signs could be attached to the walls. So the outdoor pylons were also used indoors.
Rumor has it, Massimo also suggested using just “Metro” as the name, instead of the acronym WMATA.
We only have this photocopy draft version of the manual, but we still have more boxes to open!
