Jefferson Street Makeover

Fisherman’s Wharf has a reputation as a tourist ghetto, full of the trashiest of chain restaurants like Hooters, Rainforest Cafe, merchants sell “Alcatraz Psycho Ward Escapee” sweaters, the sidewalks are too narrow, there are no good views of the water, and locals only go when forced be visiting friends and relatives.

Wharf merchants have been working with the city since 2006 to redesign the wharf and next month construction is set to start on rebuilding Jefferson Street.

The finished project — which has been in the works since 2006 — will feature new trees, more outdoor seating, bike lanes and more walking room for pedestrians. Delivery trucks will be allowed on the street before 11 a.m., and two narrow lanes of traffic will be open for personal vehicles.

Jefferson Street is centerpiece of the plan developed by renowned urban planner Jan Gehl. Rebuilding Jefferson Street in a bike and pedestrian boulevard fills a gap in the bay trail through Fisherman’s Wharf and will link standalone attractions together as part of a corridor.
