Transit-only lanes are being installed this weekend on a three-block stretch of Church Street between 16th Street - where the 22-Fillmore bus line turns onto the street - to the Duboce portal where the J-Church trains enter the subway.

Until now bussed boarded at the corners on the outside lanes while the trains boarded at the island stop. When a bus stops to board during a green light, car drivers do the smart thing and use the center lanes, but then when the light turns red it only a takes a couple cars to prevent a train from boarding. During the next green the train stops and car traffic uses the outside lane and does the same thing to block the busses.

Now cars and transit have their own lanes, neither Muni or car traffic will be stuck behind the other. The bike corridor - if you are wondering - is one block over giving cyclists a calmer street free of tracks.
