The large orange hangar visible in the French Air Force photos is not visible in satellite imagery of Niamey airport dated December 2012. Basing drones at a civilian airport is a known practice, but as the conflict did not break out until January 2013 the drone deployment didn’t begin until after these images were taken.
The Washington Post notes that the US has also deployed drones to Niamey and describes the “newest outpost in the U.S. government’s empire of drone bases sits behind a razor-wire-topped wall outside this West African capital”, “the gray, mosquito-shaped aircraft emerge sporadically from a borrowed hangar and soar north”, “the military airfield where the drones are based, near Niamey’s international airport.”
