So I found myself behind this pair of old men on the way up to the supermarket. Were they:
- An elderly gay couple?
- War criminals?
- Brothers?
- A performance art duo, à la Gilbert and George?
My curiosity pricked, I got talking to them before they continued with their shopping. Turns out they were all of the above. Lithuanian twins who had collaborated with the nazis during the war, then fled to Britain where they could indulge their incestuous love affair. In the late 1960s, influenced by Gilbert and George, they developed an interest in the avant-garde art scene, and have staged impromptu happenings in unexpected locations ever since. Of which today’s excursion in a Southampton branch of Sainsbury’s was one.
