A few years ago, Zizek wrote, “Charity is the humanitarian mask hiding the face of economic exploitation. In a superego blackmail of gigantic proportions, the developed countries ‘help’ the undeveloped with aid, credit and so on, and thereby avoid the key issue, namely their complicity in and co-responsibility for the miserable situation of the undeveloped.“
Then Teju Cole wrote about the “White Savior Industrial Complex” in The Atlantic, saying “The white savior supports brutal policies in the morning, founds charities in the afternoon, and receives awards in the evening…The White Savior Industrial Complex is not about justice. It is about having a big emotional experience that validates privilege.”
It looks like these ideas have finally “trickled up" to Warren Buffett’s son, Peter Buffett, who writes about these issues in today’s Times Op-Ed, The Charitable-Industrial Complex.
