This week’s Modern Art Notes Podcast spotlights the forthcoming exhibition “Soundings,” at the Museum of Modern Art. It is MoMA’s first show devoted to sound art. Curated by Barbara London, the show includes 16 artists and opens on August 10. Performances related to “Soundings" begin at MoMA tonight, when Pauline Oliveros will improvise What’s the Score? The complete list of exhibition-related performances is available on the exhibition’s web page and in this PDF. (Many of the performances MoMA is hosting in conjunction with the exhibition will take place before the exhibition opens to the public, so be sure to check the schedule.)
This episode of the MAN Podcast episode will be slightly different than our usual Q&A format: This program features four artists in the exhibition — Susan Philipsz, Camille Norment, Jana Winderen and Jacob Kirkegaard — talking about their art, interspersed with extended clips of their work. This week’s program is also released in stereo.
These are three images related to Philipsz’s Study for Strings (2013), which she debuted at last year’s Documenta in Kassel, Germany. Philipsz is also showing this work in “Soundings.“ The top picture is of the installation site in Kassel. (Thanks to Flickr user thefuturistics.) Next is a a diagram of the layout of Philipsz’s Study for Strings as presented in Kassel. The final image is of the work installed at MoMA, via Feast of Music (which has a ton of great images of the “Soundings” exhibition).
Philipsz is a Berlin-based, Scottish winner of the 2010 Turner Prize. Her work has been included in numerous major international exhibitions, including the Carnegie International. She has received commissions from institutions such as the MCA Chicago and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. On this week’s program she also discusses her Sunset Song (2003), which was commissioned by Artpace and which is in the collection of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
