Goal-line technology in football will avoid the pitfalls suffered by cricket – because no humans are involved - Telegraph

There might be fears among the football fraternity that submitting crucial judgments to machines could subject the game to the same kind of controversies currently engulfing cricket. […]

But from the stilted conversations I have heard between the third umpire and the men in the middle, there is a poor understanding of the technology – how it works and what it is likely to show – and a clear sense that the man with the monitors feels under intense pressure to make the right decision and quickly.
There is a human element to the process – often hampered by a poor command of English – which inevitably leads to mistakes.
No third umpire has ever spent a day in the television compound getting to grips with all the technology until last week at Old Trafford when umpire Nigel Llong had three days trialling a new version of the DRS with full control of, and instant access to, numerous camera angles, sound feeds and other sources of information.
Until specialist third umpires are employed with full comprehension of all the decision-making aids, the system will continue to be flawed.
Football has no such worries. All the goal-line judgments will be made by a computer processing the various camera angles. No human will get involved.
Referees, with one less decision to be harangued about, can breathe a touch easier.
