Darius Kazemi attempts to automate fandom with Scenes from the Wire, an automated tumblr of TV GIFs with captions (a popular tumblr thing to do). He describes:

it’s a bot that makes animated GIFs from TV shows and posts them to tumblr. The way it works is pretty simple: I have a video of The Wire and its corresponding subtitle file, which provides dialogue with timestamps. The bot finds some dialogue at random, looks up the timestamps, clips the video, gifs it, and uploads to tumblr.

Its not pretty simple, I asked him about the code and he said its a complicated hack of several APIs that only work on his computer.
