8/15/13 Soundings : A Contemporary Score is the long awaited sound art survey currently on view at MOMA. At the entrance one first encounters  Sergei Tcherepnin’s bench from a subway platform which is fitted to vibrate as if a train is passing in the tunnel below. Tristan Perich’s wall piece for 1500 small speakers at first appears to be an elegant piece of op minimalism emitting white noise, but on closer inspection each speaker is emitting a different pitch. Jacob Kirkegaard’s Aion piece has its own room, which utilizes layered room tones recorded in Chernobyl against scenes of those locations. Jana Winderen has created an immersive multi-channel piece consisting of field recordings of high frequencies from bats, shrimp etc that are normally outside the range of human hearing, pitched into our hearing range. Carsten Nicolai’s sleek piece uses sound to vibrate and reflect pools of water into elegant spirals. NY based Uruguyan Richard Garet presented a turntable amplified and endelssly rolling a marble as a  sisyphean statement. The show was carefully curated and presented by MOMA’s Barbara London.
