The Collingwood Elevated
Until the Market Street subway was built in the 1970s, the Twin Peaks Tunnel ended at Castro Street, with the streetcars entering and exiting through a portal in the center median of Market street.
During construction outbound streetcars were diverted around the original tunnel portal via a bridge one block west on Collingwood and new tunnel portals built partially over the decommissioned Eureka Station.
The “Eureka Portals”, and trackway connecting to the F-line, are still in use for maintenance access. The remains of the old station platforms are visible just west of Castro Station if you take a KLMT train between there and Forest Hill.
The walls of the original portal are still in place in this August 22, 1973 from the SFMTA Photo Archive and had the same kind of design as the Sunset Tunnel portal at Duboce Park.
