motherjones-dan-snyders-precious-81-year

motherjones:

Dan Snyder’s precious 81 year history is one half of one percent as long as that of Native Americans

Something not directly relevant, but maybe still worth adding: both this timeline and the Oatmeal strip on Columbus that’s going around use the short chronology theory. This holds that the earliest human settlement in North America was roughly 15 kya (kya = thousand years ago), and is also known as Clovis First. (It’s more complicated than that, but I don’t understand it all well enough to try to represent more than a sketch. Look it up if you’re interested.) Lately, majority expert opinion has been leaning more toward the long chronology theory, which is that people were showing up on these landmasses more like 30 kya. It’s not clear, however, that those people were ancestors of anyone living today.

Again, this is not particularly relevant. The length of time someone’s ancestors have been in a particular place probably shouldn’t be given a lot of weight in a decision about whether to institutionalize slurs on them. (Just as, for example, the length of time that sports fans have been using an insulting name is also not really relevant.) The team name wouldn’t be only half as bad if Native peoples had showed up half as long ago.

But because the erasure of indigenous history – and especially of changes, events, and developments in that history – is such a central part of that racism, it seems worthwhile to point out that these timelines are, if anything, quite conservative.

In conclusion: cram it, Dan Snyder.
