Google search is now powered by the new Hummingbird algorithm. It is supposed to understand more casual, conversational inquires such as ‘best pizza in my area’,  treating the sentence as a whole rather than a list of keywords. It also uses its knowledge about you, your age, gender and geolocation as well as using Google’s impressive knowledge graph. What strikes me as interesting is the resemblance between the criteria now exploited for an accurate web search and the criteria used for ad targeting, I guess Google are now firmly rooted in both businesses, blurring the distinction between the two.
