modernism-in-metroland:

Trinity Square Development, Gateshead (1962-67) by Owen Luder Partnership

Multi storey car aprk and shopping complex by the firm of Owen Luder, who died on Friday. Born in 1928, he formed the Owen Luder Partnership in 1957, with architect Rodney Gordon joining the same year

Together they produced a range of flats, shopping centres, office and car parks, all recognizable by board marked concrete finishes, spiral staircases and strong horizontal and vertical lines.

The most famous, or infamous, of these were the Tricorn Centre in Portsmouth and Trinity Square in Gateshead, both now demolished.

Gordon left the practice in the 1970s, Luder went on to serve as president of RIBA twice, and was still giving interviews about his firm’s work in his 90s.
