Symbionese Liberation Army (S.L.A.) Communique No. 7
A couple weeks before Patty Hearst was captured on security camera footage brandishing a sawed-off M1 carbine and actively participating in the 1974 tax day Hibernia Bank heist with her erstwhile kidnappers, the S.L.A., John Bryan received a package from the group at his small underground newspaper, The San Francisco Phoenix. Wrapped in a dozen red roses was a communique promising Patty’s imminent release, one half of her driver’s license for verification of authenticity and the Codes of War of the S.L.A. The roses were primarily used to disguise the delivery, but were also a gesture of goodwill to Bryan, who had reason to be wary of a package coming from them after running a fictitious S.L.A. interview in the previous issue of his paper.
