not-questioning-the-data-here-i-dunno-how-the

Not questioning the data here - I dunno how the researchers (possibly Kantar but they’re uncredited) derived it, so I can’t critique it - but its presentation is grotesque. That graphic?? An 18 point drop from 100 to 82 and there’s barely a difference in the size of the figure, but a 25-point gain and it’s like something out of a Judge Dredd “Fatties” story.

(& it’s mislabelled - 100 calories a day and we’re all dead - this is an index, obviously)

Plus, of course - and this is the issue with infographics - they are no use at talking at all sensibly about, well, ANYTHING. Poor people have less healthy diets than rich people - this is well-known. All this graphic does is skew the analysis of that to POOR PEOPLE ARE FATTIES WHO EAT TOO MUCH, there’s no chance of thinking about the kinds of food that are being eaten in each band, how much they cost, why people on those incomes might make those choices, what alternatives they might have, etc. All that’s out the window given an opportunity to bust out the comedy fatty icons.
