These are nunataks, and the date of 1956 makes it very likely that this photo was taken in the runup to IGY.The caption uses a conventional phrasing that irritates me: calling the South Pole’s entire neighborhood “the South Pole”. This is probably the southernmost bare land, Mount Howe, about 300 km from the pole. If the photograph was taken (not just processed or accessioned) in August, it must have been a fun flight.
