gregdotorg:

the main element in this collage by ellsworth kelly is a squatting tan lifeguard in red swimsuit, in profile against a blue sky, from a suntan lotion ad in life magazine. his blonde and sunglass-wearing head has been torn out, and a faint drawing of an bright-eyed face with Black features and hair has replaced it in the void. (more) problematically, perhaps, a tiny head of a gorilla, carefully trimmed, has been collaged on the lifeguard's shoulder, like a black and white tattoo, perhaps? it is not clear. kelly, then 41, gave this work, and another made from a suntan lotion ad from a few weeks prior, to a wavy-haired twink he later took to paris for three months. these two collages are being sold at rago arts in new jerseyALT

Ellsworth Kelly made this collage/drawing with elements from a July 1964 issue of LIFE magazine, including an ad for Sea & Ski suntan lotion. He made it for David McCorkle, a young ward who later traveled with him to Paris for three months, but that is not McCorkle’s Black face drawn in place of the lifeguard’s.

for reference, here is David, in one of the many portraits Kelly drew of him. This one was published as a large lithograph during their stay in Paris.

a spare, loose line drawing of david mccorkle by ellsworth kelly, made in 1964, depicts mccorkle with swept back hair, an aquiline nose, prominent ears, a strong jaw, and lips that look like they could get him a free trip to paris. he's wearing a collarless shirt under a v-neck sweater, or maybe it's all one thing, they used to have those in the 60s. anyway, this drawing was published as a 90cm tall lithograph by kelly's paris gallery, and he gave this artist proof to the norton simon museum in 1969.ALT
