Second Historic Streetcar Line to Open Next Summer
One of the lines added in the under Muni service plan approved on Friday is the long-planned E-Embarcadero which will run along the Embarcadero to from Caltrain to Fishermans’ Wharf. The new line will share track with the N and T between Caltrain and the Ferry Building, where it will continue north with the F-line.
All of the trackway connections and boarding platforms where built when N-Judah was extended to Caltrain. Without any new construction needed, Muni has been running limited E-line service during special events like Sunday Streets. Muni ran the E-line for five weekends last fall to handle ridership demand during the America’s Cup races.
With ever-growing ridership we’re hitting the point where everyday demand is reaching the same level as event service just a few years ago.
In Summer 2015, the E-Embarcadero will make the leap from special events to Weekend service from 11:00am - 7:00pm when demand is highest.
In Spring 2016, the E-Embarcadero will expand to full-time service.
Market Street Railway (Muni’s non-profit preservation parter which has helped restore, clean, and donated supplies, paint, signals and decorations, all the way up to entire streetcars) believes the rollout should be accelerated, but we’re glad to at least have a date now. And it’s not all that far off.
More immediately, Muni will be increasing service on the F-line this summer to help with the extra crowding.
