I wanted to see if this was an actual real thing that had happened, because, you know, we’ve had all-glass skyscrapers for ages, and I’ve never heard of this happening before.

It is. Of course the problem isn’t the building’s glass exterior. It’s that it’s curved:

Which is incredible because anyone with a rudimentary grasp of physics could have told them that this would happen:

So in addition to being heavy-handed satire about first world excess, it’s also a pretty on-point reminder of another way we’re going wrong: resurgent anti-intellectualism means that fewer and fewer people are consulting with or listening to scientists.

Anyway, back to your joke.

I am delighted that it fried someone’s excessively costly car rather than someone’s utterly necessary junker

Also at work is that architecture lately has become a bizarre modern art thing where it matters less its actual function as a building and more whatever Deep and Meaningful bullshit it communicates.  Remember Fallingwater?  It leaks.  And has mold.

So I am completely unsurprised this happened.  People have been building really shitty designed buildings because they’re so “modern” for almost a century.  Of course this shit would happen.

Can we also appreciate what the developers blamed? They blamed the “current elevation of the sun in the sky”.

Now, I’m all for “we are as gods and have to get good at it”, but before we start trying to move the sun, I’d like it if we could, y’know, actually be good at it.
