(via Hidden Beached Whale Revealed in Dutch Painting)
“At the time the painting was created, there was a surge of public interest in whales, researchers at the museum said, noting that historical records document a number of whale strandings on the coastline of the Netherlands in the beginning of the 17th century.”
Amazing, this. Also, brings up the difficultly of restoration. The painting has to be left ‘restored’, but should that be with or without the whale? The National Portrait Gallery in London has a few paintings that are/were displayed next to x-rays to show paintings underneath the top layer, but they left the paintings as they were last displayed by the owner.
