Villa Epecuén

Epecuén, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina

37°7′51″S 62°48′27″W

Villa Epecuén was a tourist village located on Lago Epecuén in the Buenos Aires Province of Argentina. Developed in the 1920s, Epecuén had a thriving tourism industry as vacationers from Buenos Aires would travel via train to the therapeutic salty waters of the lake. However, on the 10th of November 1985, a standing wave caused by a rare weather pattern broke a nearby dam and the dike protecting the town. The surrounding waters rose progressively, reaching a height of 10 meters (33 feet). The village was declared uninhabitable and never rebuilt.
