Mel Bochner - If The Colour Changes, Whitechapel Gallery
To say that this latest exhibition from the New York artist is just about colour would be a very reductionist view but with colour filling the whitewashed walls, floors and even the staircase it is easy to see why this view wouldn’t be challenged.
Theory of Painting and Actual Size at Eye Level, along with the impressive Event Horizon, fully use the space available and the bright colours are fantastic. A particular stand out piece is Transparent and Opaque where different techniques have been brought to printing involving coloured plates and Vaseline displaying a new visual language across the 12 pieces.
It his more recent Thesaurus Paintings that are confusing, another interpretation of language or of colour, Bochner brings a new way of viewing words gradually changing the hues as well as the sentiment whilst the text remains the same, these paintings are imposing in the upstairs rooms and are reminiscent of Psychology’s Stroop tests.
If The Colour Changes is an exploration of material, of texture, with colour being the static medium, rather than this exhibition being about colour changing it focuses on the changing qualities that colour is able to bring.
This exhibition is on display at Whitechapel Gallery until December 30th.
