elbowplants:

heroine: ida lupino

ida lupino directed “the masks,” one of my favorite twilight zone episodes, and a series of films during the ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s. she was also an actress, billed as the “english jean harlow,” who turned down roles the studio offered her when she felt they were “beneath her dignity as an actress”

“In the mid-1940s, while on suspension for turning down a role, Lupino became interested in directing. Her time on suspension allowed her to spend her time observing the filming and editing processes, which would aid her in her directorial endeavors. She described herself as being bored on set while ‘someone else seemed to be doing all the interesting work.’” -Wikipedia

she went on to write & direct films “focusing on topics once considered taboo for the commercial film industry—unwanted pregnancy, polio, bigamy, and women competing in a world of men”

Not only did Lupino take control of production, direction and screenplay, but each of her movies addresses the brutal repercussions of sexuality, independence and dependence.” -Carrie Rickey, The Village Voice, “Lupino Noir,” Nov. 4, 1980

she was the first female director of a film noir & the only female director of a “twilight zone” episode. she was also the only person to both star in & direct episodes of “twilight zone”

she also had a great sense of humor and was super stylish, IMO

i want to watch her films

she was a badass
