Ivanpah, California, USA
The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System is a solar thermal power project in the California Mojave Desert, 40 miles (64 km) southwest of Las Vegas, Nevada. It deploys 173,500 heliostats, each with two mirrors, focusing solar energy on boilers located on three centralized solar power towers (one of which is seen here). The receivers then generate steam to drive specially adapted turbines. With a construction cost of $2.2 billion and a planned gross capacity of 392 megawatts, Ivanpah is the largest plant of its kind in the world.
