South Africa has the second largest oil refining capacity in Africa after Algeria. The Caltex/Chevron Refinery in Cape Town is one of the largest in the country with an output of 100,000 barrels per day. Because the complex was built in close proximity to residential areas, the resulting pollution has led to serious health complications and the implementation of more stringent environmental restrictions. The refinery’s tanks for the storage of refined crude oil are seen here.
